New Business Officers (NBO) Program

July 23-24, 2010

Member Registration Fee: $485
Non-Member Registration Fee: $535

The New Business Officers Program has established itself as a valuable experience for those new to the role of Chief Business Officer, with some 500 alumni in the past decade.  Explore a wide range of issues that a chief business officer faces, and examine the complexities of campus leadership n this intensive two-day workshop.

Content areas include leadership styles, planning, board relationships, and emerging issues. You'll be challenged to evaluate your current practices and strategies as well as have a great opportunity to exchange ideas and network with colleagues.

Leading higher education consultants Larry Goldstein and Pat Sanaghan facilitate the program, with special topics covered by a college president, a provost, and experienced chief business officers.

Attendance at the New Business Officers Program, by application only, is limited to chief business and financial officers who report directly to the president and who have been in their current positions for less than three years.

Learning level:  Advanced

Who Should Attend:   Chief business and financial officers

You do not need to attend the Annual Meeting to register for this program. However, you must register via the Annual Meeting registration process.

Using the Campus Carbon CalculatorTM for your Climate Action Planning

July 24, 2010

Registration Fee: $200

For institutions embarking upon the climate action, the first step is always the same: determine the campus's greenhouse gas footprint so you can create the best plan for how to tackle it.  The majority of the campuses pledging to become "carbon neutral" under the American College and University President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) base their drive-to-zero on footprint analysis done using Clean Air-Cool Planet's (CA-CP's) Campus Carbon CalculatorTM.  The Campus Carbon Calculator's results allow a campus to gauge its energy efficiency, identify opportunities and priorities for emissions reductions, note emissions trends and, if undertaken annually, mark progress.  New modules available in Version 6 of the Calculator also assist campuses in the next step -- evaluating and strategically bundling their emissions reduction options, based on quantitative analyses of the financial and emissions-related impact of potential policies and projects.

If you are trying to figure out how to get started evaluating specific mitigation strategies, or are curious how other schools have gotten their reduction numbers and set their targets, this workshop is for you.   The planning process can quickly become overwhelming, but the new Solutions Module of CA-CP's Campus Carbon CalculatorTM can help you evaluate the potential carbon reduction efficacy of different initiatives and construct scenarios for meeting possible targets and timetables given your funding and institutional constraints.

Target Audience:

Colleges and Universities that have completed their GHG inventory but have not yet completed their climate action plan.  Attendees should have already completed or be very close to completing a greenhouse gas inventory using the Campus Carbon Calculator, which would also ensure all attendees are familiar with Excel.  If the participants used an earlier version of the Calculator for their inventories, they should look over the inventory portion of v6.X before attending the workshop.

Goals:

  •  Provide participants with a thorough understanding of the CCC projection and solutions tools
  • Go into depth on how to set targets, prioritize and compare carbon reduction projects, and incorporate this information into the climate action plan
  • Focus on the unique carbon footprint challenges and opportunities for each institution
  • Learn how to get specific about reduction targets

 Differentiation:

  • This workshop is focused on one specific piece of the climate action planning process- using a specific tool to analyze and evaluate carbon reduction initiatives, given funding and institutional constraints.
  • How to get specific about reduction target
  • How to compare carbon mitigation strategies

A half-day session.  Each participant would need to bring their own computer, loaded with version 6.5 of the Campus Carbon CalculatorTM.  CA-CP would develop handouts for participants that would model business-as-usual projections as well as "solutions" mitigation strategy data inputs.  As part of the workshop preparation, participants would be asked to send their GHG inventory summaries and examples of at least three mitigation strategies under consideration to CA-CP, and to bring these to the workshop as well.
